SAGE - Objectives and Status

Objectives

  • To demonstrate to high TRL engine technologies that will contribute to the reduction of CO2, NOx and noise emissions and contribute to the achievement of the ACARE 2020 environmental targets.
  • To demonstrate the integration of open rotor engines, confirm the environmental benefits of this engine configuration and that reduced noise levels can be achieved.
  • To demonstrate a range of technologies to reduce weight and increase efficiency of fans, compressors, structures, combustors, turbines and externals of application to turbofan, geared turbofan and turboshaft engines, as well as gas generators for open rotor engines.
  • To enhance the competitiveness of the European aero-engine industry by enabling early availability of advanced technologies for new product developments.

Status

The three SAGE projects focussed on turbofans, geared turbofans and turboshafts have progressed through their preliminary planning phases and detailed designs and plans are being prepared for the demonstrators and their testing. Donor engines have been selected, work shares agreed and work packages for Call for Proposal defined and awarded to Partners. These three projects are on schedule to deliver their demonstrations in 2012-2014.

Open rotor technology is a developing field and the full scale of the necessary engine and aircraft integration demonstration is still developing. An integrated Clean Sky planning for open rotor demonstration has been agreed that spans the ITDs planning significant demonstrations. The two open rotor projects are progressing to this plan and will develop in line with the joint decisions to be made as the technology develops.
