Technology Evaluator
Clean Sky will develop and demonstrate a large set of innovative technologies, covering all segments of commercial aviation.
Role of the Technology Evaluator
The Technology Evaluator (TE) has the key role of assessing the environmental impact of those technologies. For this purpose, Air Traffic is considered as a process, with inputs, outputs and impacts, characterized through inventories and relevant metrics.

Principles of the Technology Evaluator
Stand-alone technologies will first be evaluated at ITD design level.
For the environmental impact assessment by the TE, pre-designs of new aircraft using one or a combination of Clean Sky technologies will be prepared by the ITDs. The TE will insert these new “Conceptual aircraft” into evaluation scenarios, using traffic growth and route forecasts going to 2020 and beyond.
The TE will then assess the environmental improvements brought about by these technology combinations, by substituting Conceptual aircraft, stemming from Clean Sky, for some of the Reference aircraft of present design, in the Reference scenario.
Environmental impacts will be addressed at several levels:
- Aircraft lifecycle ground phases (manufacturing, maintenance, withdrawal from service)
- Single Aircraft operation at mission level, from A to B,
- Operations at airport level,
- Global Air Traffic operations at Regional/ Global level.
Example of high-level metrics to be used: exposure of population to noise, air traffic contribution to local air quality around airports, CO² production at World level…
